Weekly Mega Millions buy-ins land the Michigan man’s $5 million prize

LANSING, MI — A special set of numbers and a weekly routine helped a Farmington Hills man win a $5 million Mega Millions jackpot recently.

“I’m playing Mega Millions once a week and I always play this set of songs that are made up of special dates,” said Tyrone Fergerson, 53. “I woke up in the middle of the night so I decided to check my ticket. I said a prayer and then looked up the winning numbers. I recognized them immediately and was at a loss for words when I saw that I won not $1 million, but $5 million! All I can say is winning is incredible and I feel humbled and grateful!”

Fergerson matched all five white numbers drawn — 01-06-10-23-27 — for the Sept. 24 drawing to win a $1 million prize. However, he also chose to play the Megaplier option, which was 5x for that night, increasing his winnings to $5 million.

“Learning you’ve won $5 million in the middle of the night is the type of thing lottery players dream of, and it became a reality for Mr. Fergerson,” Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli said. “Congratulations to Tyrone, Michigan’s Newest Millionaire – Thanks to the Michigan Lottery’s Mega Millions Game!”

Fergerson purchased his winning ticket at the Chill Box Convenience Store, located at 29801 West 9 Mile Road in Farmington Hills. With his winnings, Fergerson says he plans to take care of his family.

The last players from Michigan to win a Mega Millions or Powerball jackpot is the Breakfast Club lottery club, which claimed an $842 million jackpot in June 2024. Members plan to use the money to buy a home in Florida and travel.

And even if they were lucky winners, it’s smart for players to check their tickets right away, as a $1 million Mega Millions winner sold in Southfield in 2023 went missing. The money instead went to the state’s School Aid Fund.
