Author Michael Downing quoted his book, “Spring Forward: Summertime’s Annual Madness, in an interview with Time Magazinewhich explains that Amtrak and the railroads were the main reason the clocks changed at 02.00 for summer time.

When DST was established, there were no trains leaving the station at 2 on Sunday in New York City, when daylight savings time was born.

According to Downing, “Sunday morning at 2am was when they would cut the least amount of train travel around the country.”

Why is Daylight Savings Time a thing? What is it?

The goal of daylight savings time is to ensure more daylight hours in a day for a number of reasons, but primarily to save energy. There have also been arguments that more daylight hours benefit public safety and health.

Daylight saving time was first introduced in the United States in 1918 during World War I, and it was known as “war time”. It was then abandoned after the war as there was no financial need to continue it at the time.

Daylight saving time as we know it today began in the United States with Uniform Time Act of 1966only it started on the last Sunday in April and ended on the last Sunday in October.

In 2005, it was moved to begin on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November, as it is today. A study by the Department of Energy found that the extra four weeks of daylight saving time saved about 0.5% of total electricity daily in the United States, which equates to energy savings of 1.3 billion kilowatt-hours annually.

What is the Sunshine Protection Act?

The Sunshine Protection Act of 2021which was created to make daylight saving time the new, permanent standard time, was unanimously passed by the US Senate in 2022, but it was not passed by the US House of Representatives.

There is currently no news on when it will be considered again and then signed into law.

In spite of The Sunshine Protection Act is unanimously approved by US Senate in 2022, there is no permanent end in sight.
