Minnesotans reflect on the ’91 blizzard amid this year’s Halloween snow

As heavy snow falls across Minnesota on Thursday, people are looking back at the Halloween blizzard of 1991 like it was yesterday.

Bright orange autumn colors were drenched in winter white, the fresh powder bringing back old memories for some residents of St. Louis Park.

“It’s covered in snow. Yeah, that’s the icing on the cake, so to speak,” a St. Louis Park resident told 5 WITNESS NEWS.

It sounds like a tall tale, but a blizzard was reality for Minnesotans on October 31, 1991. History takes on new life every October.

“I remember I had a little Honda Accord. The buses got stuck,” the resident said. “I kind of went to sleep the rest of the day.”

Families faced plummeting temperatures and strong winds as they trekked through piles of snow.

Fast forward 33 years later, snow is still no match for Minnesotans or their pets as some brave the temperature with a walk around Lake of the Isles.

This Halloween’s snowy forecast doesn’t come close to 1991, but you can never speak too early.

Mother Nature always has a trick up her sleeve.

“I’m calling it a trick just because it was 80 degrees earlier this week,” said a Minnesotan walking his dog.
