Smile Director reveals conditions for developing a smile 3

Parker Finn Smile 2 made a bigger splash with its opening than the original Smile in 2022 with not only its box office but also with critics as the sequel has 85% positive reviews compared to the original’s 79% positive. In addition to garnering more attention than the debut film, the sequel ended with a more explicit tease that the demonic curse of the franchise was about to be taken to new levels, with Finn recently confirming that he would only be interested in continuing the saga whether he could find a way to tell character stories as opposed to delivering cheap scares. He also teased that he personally saw a lot of storytelling possibilities for the franchise, although a third film has yet to be officially confirmed. Smile 2 is in the cinema now.

“Well, I will say this, I think there are many interesting paths in the future Smile could go down. For me, I love all the things that go bump in the night and all the really scary things about the big concept of Smile and the Smiler,” Finn elaborated Collider. “But really, for me, Smile is a vehicle for telling really intense and hopefully thought-provoking character stories, and so I want to make sure, whether more than one person feels that way, that we still find a way to really invest intimacy in the storytelling. It’s super important to me. But I think there are some really interesting tricks still up their sleeves Smile.”

The original film focused on Dr. Rose Cutter (Sosie Bacon) who witnessed a client kill himself in front of her, only for the audience to realize that the young woman had been possessed by a supernatural curse. IN Smile 2had the curse found its way to pop singer Skye Riley (Naomi Scott), whose past trauma and guilt manifested the curse in bigger and more horrifying ways.

WARNING: Spoilers below for Smile 2

Part of what sets the sequel apart from the original film is that while the debut film saw the curse pass from one person to another, in the finale of Smile 2Skye violently kills herself in front of an entire audience at her concert. It can be assumed that thousands of people in the audience will now be affected by the curse, spreading it even further for another post.

Finn is currently attached to develop a remake of the 1981 horror classic Possessionand while that project doesn’t have a release date, it seems likely he’d move on it before a new one Smile. However, the success of both films could mean that, instead of Finn directing a follow-up film, another filmmaker could step in. Smile 3or that another story could be told in that world that was not a direct continuation of Smile 2.
