ESPN’s afternoon edition of SportsCenter will originate from Charlotte’s campus TODAYhosted by anchor Matt Barrie 2 p.m in the campus quad between the College of Education and the College of Health and Human Services, south of the Popp-Martin Student Union.

Students, fans and guests are encouraged to watch the show from inside the quad and be featured in the backdrop showing their best 49er spirit. Members of the 49er cheer squads, Norm the Niner, and the band will also be in attendance.

GAME NOTES

  • Charlotte enters their second season under a head coach Beef Poggiwho was named the program’s third head coach on November 15, 2022.

  • Tulane is currently receiving votes in this week’s polls, giving the 49ers four opponents on the 2024 schedule so far to either be ranked or receive votes in the polls. It is the third game in a row for Charlotte to face a ranked team.

  • Through eight games (3-5 overall), the combined record of the five opponents the 49ers have defeated is 31-8 (.795).

  • A win against Tulane would give Charlotte at least four wins on the season for the first time since 2021. Charlotte has posted consecutive 3-9 seasons in 2022 and 2023.

  • The 49ers host ESPN on Thursday night for the first time in program history. The program has appeared regularly on the ESPN family of networks, but only once (Bahamas Bowl, 2019) has the program appeared on the network’s flagship.

  • Charlotte has played on Halloween twice before: Marshall, 2015 (L, 10-34) and at Duke, 2020 (L, 19-53). The 49ers are 3-2 all-time in Thursday games.

  • BY THE COMMITTEE: Through the first eight games, Charlotte has started three different quarterbacks this season and played multiple quarterbacks for meaningful snaps in five games.

  • COMEBACK STARS: The 49ers return very few starters from last season’s squad, but the list of returners is loaded with star power. Defensive back Dontae Balfour was named preseason All-AAC by Phil Steele and Athlon as well as return specialist/running back Henry Rutledge. Close end Colin Weberinstead of starting duty last season, became the first tight end in program history to lead the team in receiving. Urgent end Stone Handy picked up preseason second team honors from Phil Steele and joined at linebacker Prince Wallace-Bemah which earned third team recognition.

  • PROGRAM FACTS: Charlotte 49ers Football enters its 12th year of existence and 10th year at the FBS level. The 49ers football program started in 2013 and spent two years as an FCS Independent before fast-tracking to the FBS as a member of Conference USA in 2015. The CLT joined the AAC in 2023. In 2019, Charlotte enjoyed its first winning season and participated in its first bowl game: 2019 Makers Wanted Bahamas Bowl.

  • NEW ARRIVALS, NEW ARRIVALS, NEW ARRIVALS: Charlotte is on the nation’s top turnover rosters in the nation in 2024. 71 newcomers split the roster at each position group, ranking only behind Army (74) and North Texas (77) in total newcomers between their 2023 and 2024 rosters. The 49ers are tied with Colorado (44) for the most transfer additions in the country.
